Warren Sapp called out Miami coach Al Golden on Wednesday (USA Today Sports)

NFL Hall of Famer and NFL Network analyst Warren Sapp has been stirring things up at the Super Bowl this week with several comments about the Hall of Fame resume of New York Giants great Michael Strahan. The always-outspoken Sapp, a standout at Miami from 1991-94, also sounded off about Al Golden and the state of the Hurricanes program on Wednesday.

As a guest on WQAM 560 in Miami, Sapp was asked about the recent struggles of the Miami defense and defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio. He didn’t hold back.

“Don’t talk to me about Al Golden and whatever that D-coordinator’s name is,” Sapp said. “Let me tell you what I’ve learned in the 19 years of being around the NFL. Don’t hire someone you can’t fire. That’s the golden rule. The D-coordinator is killing my school. That looks like no Miami defense in the history of our school.”

D’Onofrio, who has coached with Golden at Virginia and Temple before following him to Miami, is not exactly a favorite among Miami fans. His defenses ranked No. 120 and No. 90 in the country the past two seasons, and the Canes 2013 season ended horribly in a 36-9 Citrus Bowl loss to Louisville. In that game, D’Onofrio’s defense allowed Louisville to gain 554 yards of total offense.

In addition to the defensive struggles, Sapp was not pleased with Al Golden reportedly interviewing for the head coaching job at Penn State – Golden’s alma mater.

“Didn’t Al Golden go interview for Penn State? I have a real issue with that,” Sapp said. “You’re sitting at the University of Miami. The ‘U’. The Canes. In Coral Gables, Florida with all the palm trees and beautiful South Beach just around the corner and you go interview at Happy Valley?”

With comments like that, I wouldn't expect Golden to invite Sapp to speak to the team any time soon.
