Virginia Tech's Adonis Alexander, Houshun Gaines suspended

Virginia Tech has suspended two defensive players indefinitely.

The team announced the suspensions of cornerback Adonis Alexander and defensive end Houshun Gaines on Tuesday with no reason given. According to the Roanoke Times, arrest records indicate both players were caught possessing marijuana.

From the Times:

Alexander, 19, and Gaines, 18, were issued summons for possession of marijuana at 2:31 a.m. Sunday, hours after Virginia Tech concluded its spring game. The offense location was at Union Bank on North Franklin in downtown Blacksburg.

Gaines, whose summons said he had a blood alcohol content of .058, was also charged with underage possession/purchase of alcohol.

All of the charges are misdemeanors. Neither player was booked. Both are scheduled to appear in Montgomery County General District Court in Christiansburg on June 27 at 8:30 a.m.

Alexander is in line to start for Virginia Tech in 2016. He played an important role for the Hokies defense in the absence of Kendall Fuller in 2015. Fuller, a likely early choice in the NFL draft that starts this weekend, was sidelined with a knee injury after playing just three games. Alexander had 55 tackles and four interceptions in 2015. He appeared in 12 games and made eight starts.

Gaines redshirted in 2015 and is expected to get significant playing time in 2016.
