Virginia Tech QB Michael Brewer is game-time decision for Friday
Virginia Tech could see the return of quarterback Michael Brewer for Friday night’s game against N.C. State.
According to the Roanoke Times, Brewer, who suffered a broken collarbone in the Hokies' season-opening loss to Ohio State, has been cleared to practice and is considered a “game-time decision” for Friday’s home game. Brewer began throwing in practice last week, but wasn’t fully cleared to participate until this week.
That would certainly be good news for a Hokies offense that managed to put up just 100 total yards in a 17-13 loss to Pitt over the weekend. Brewer was initially given a 4-8 week timetable for his return after he was injured against the Buckeyes on Sept. 7. He has remained in a leadership role while out and has traveled with the team to away games.
“Michael has never been out of sight or out of mind ever since the time he was injured,” offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler said per the Times. “He’s a guy who’s really important to our team as a leader. That’s why we traveled him. He’s a guy who’s helping our team. He’s helping myself.”
Brewer, a Texas Tech transfer, threw for 2,692 yards, 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions for the Hokies in 2014.
With Brewer out, junior Brenden Motley has filled in with mixed results. Overall, Motley has thrown for 861 yards and seven touchdowns while completing 57.1 percent of his throws. He’s also thrown five interceptions.
While the news for Brewer was encouraging, the Hokies lost running back Marshawn Williams to another knee injury. Williams, who suffered a torn ACL last November, re-injured the knee during practice last week, the program confirmed, and is out for the season. Williams had 475 yards and four touchdowns as a true freshman before the injury last year. He did not play this year and will likely redshirt.
The loss to Pitt over the weekend dropped the Hokies to 2-3 on the season
