Virginia safety Joseph Williams is on a hunger strike for university workers

(Virginiasports.com)Rarely do we see student-athletes, football players, get involved in political matters that affect the universities where they play. We're not talking about student government, but the politics that happen within the university, disputes between workers or teachers and administration

Virginia safety Joseph Williams is changing that.

For the past eight days, Williams, a junior walk-on who has played in two games during his career, has been on a hunger strike "to protest the economic and social injustices perpetrated by the UVa administration against the vast majority of the University's service-sector employees."

Williams, a political and social thought major, wrote an eloquent and poignant essay about why he was participating in the hunger strike with the Living Wage Campaign.

Our University seeks to distinguish itself as a caring community and prides itself on traditions of honor and student self-governance. However, in our "caring community," hundreds of contract employees may make as little as $7.25/hour while six out of the top ten highest paid state employees in Virginia hold administrative positions at the University. Many employees, mostly women and African Americans, do not receive enough pay for their basic necessities to exist in Charlottesville, where the cost of living is nearly 10% higher than the national average. This extreme inequality has disturbed and disillusioned students for decades, many of whom have tried to grapple with issues of race, class, and poverty in and out of the classroom.

It's not often that you read this kind of political discourse by such a young man, and let's be honest, a football player. But Williams is not your ordinary student-athlete. He graduated from Dominion (Sterling, Va.) High when he was 16. In his essay he notes that he was one of four children supported by a single mother and that he lived in 30 different places, including many homeless shelters, which gave him a profound appreciation for socioeconomic challenges.

He walked on at Virginia at age 17 and has been refining his knowledge of politics ever since.

He does not say how long he plans to stay on strike, but as of Thursday, 18 students were involved in the cause. It's interesting, and even somewhat refreshing, to see a student-athlete go to the extremes for what he believes.

I always laugh when I read comments like "oh if they would've gone to college they wouldn't had to work those types of jobs" bwahahahaha!!! I graduated college 4 years ago with a bachelors and work at a call center making 12 bucks an hour. I make 750 after taxes and pay 800 in rent. the rest goes to student loans, food, gas, cable, etc. My friend knows this guy who came from India 6 years ago never stepped a foot in college and runs a million dollar company. NOT JOKING. College is an experience it doesn't guarantee anything.

Hey sissy! Want some cheese with that WHINE??? Navy Seals, Marines, and Army Special forces make less than that! At least mommy and daddy helped you!
      • diane 2 months ago
Don't listen to the idiots, such as the the "hey sissie" guy, he is a fool, as if our armed services personnel making less money than you do discredits your point "that there are many factors ,other than a lack of higher education, that are preventing people from earning a living wage. And what a blanket statement " at least mommy and daddy helped you", as if that would be a bad thing, if they did that is wonderful.

In 1965 a guy could come out of high school get a job at the corner garage as a mechanic, have a wife and two kids (wife was a stay at home mom) and they could afford to buy a home
Gee I wonder what happened to that?
Now before you ladies go off the deep end....the point is about buying a home.
      • ROBERT F 2 months ago
Nothing happened to it. You can still do. Just don't buy 4 iPhones, two 55" plasmas, three cars, Direct TV, computer, printer, internet, Play Station, Wii, 3DS, 3,500 square foot home, Bone Fish Grill, vacations, cigarettes, pop, running your kids to three different practices, and your kid's college.
        Americans live abover their means.

        The government got involved....
      • mikea 2 months ago
You can still do that, you just can't have the flat screen TV, the cable to go with it, the cell phone and $100 monthly bill, the internet access, air conditioning, Two cars and every other additional expense that you have now that was not around in 1965. Most mechanics make at a minimum 40k a year, which would be enough to support a family of four and buy a house but they wouldn't be able to afford all the additional things people seem to need these days.

Someone define the LIVING WAGE that can work most everywhere. If you live in California, where a semi-decent ROOM will cost you $600 per month and a barely endurable 1 bedroom apartment will cost you $1200 per month, and taking into account NOTHING ELSE but this cost of rent, it would look something like this, in California. To NET $1200 per month, you have to make at least $1600 per month GROSS PAY. That's approximately $400 per week or $10.00 per hour for a 40 hour week, just to pay your RENT for a 1 bedroom apartment. The cost of gasoline is $4.00 per gallon, and if you have a 12 gallon tank, that's $48.00 per week or almost $200 per month. Few people make it around California, locally on a single tank of gas per week, but that would take another $266 per month GROSS PAY to let you NET the $200 for gas. Divide $266 by 4 weeks, that's $66, divided by 40 hours per week is another $1.66 per hour added to your $10.00 per hour for rent, now you're at $11.66 per hour for MINIMAL gas and rent for a month. Add $400 per month for food, and $100 per month for your phone and that is another $500 which will take another $666 GROSS PAY to NET the $500. Divide the $666 by 4 weeks, that's $166 per week, divided by 40 hours, is, $4.16. Add together the $11.66, per hour, for rent and gas, and the $4.16, per hour, needed for food and phone, and you are at $15.82 per hour.

If it costs so much to live in California, why are you living in California? There are other states you could move to.
      • TMB 2 months ago
My husband and I left California, where I moved to with him when I married him, to go to Tennessee. We paid $1400 in rent for a cramped apartment. I hated living there. We own our home in Tennessee and pay $1000 a month for our mortgage.

The minimum wage in French Polynesia is over $10 USD an hour and there is no significant income tax no mater how much you make, however unemployment is high and the cost of living can be even higher than in the US. The local Government is struggling to keep things going but then again what government in the world isn't.

It is a valid point but he should have left race out of it. I am white and cannot climb the ladder due to economic excess above me. I am hard working and intelligent but I did not graduate from a top college or do an internship at my Dad's firm. I don't need the same salary as the CEOs but should they really make 10,000 times more than the average worker?
      • Rhonda 2 months ago
exactly they don't deserve 10000 times more
      • Flasheyes 2 months ago
He didn't add race in; women and blacks just "happen" to be the majority of low paid workers.
      • ethereal deal 2 months ago
He DID add race. Nothing "just happens". And Rhonda, in case you haven't figured it out yet, you don't get what you "deserve", you get what you "earn". The highest paid CEO might make 20 times the salary of the minimum wage earner but not 10,000. You people love to exagerate the numbers to begrudge those who sacrificed and worked hard to make the top wages. The only alternative is for everyone to make minimum wage, and that my dear, is communism. If this kid is so bright he wouldn't starve himself and jeopardise his health and sports ability. That's not one bit more noble than to sit in the middle of campus and soak yourself with gasoline and set youself on fire. He needs to make lots of money and give it all away to charity if he really wants to make a difference.

This is a misguided young man who has bought into the class war and social justis lie that obama is passing off as fairness in the job market. He has bought the lie that a lawn mower should be paid a salary equal to that of a university president. Karl Marx expalined it as "Each according ability and to each according to his needs." This well meaning young man has decided to join a fight that is instigated by a ruthless group of organizers that will use young people who are gullable enough beieve this basic communist ideal, such as he and in the end throw them aside worse off than they were. Karl Marx refered to the youth of a nation who he used as his activists for the illusion of social justice as "Usefull idiots" Someone with a grasp on the economy and true history should warn this young man of the dangers and the millions of innocent lives that have been lost at the hands of socialism. I am sure the rewriten history being taught in schools by "progressive teachers" has been bastardized to the point that communism is an acceptable alternate to capitalism. What is a Social Thought major? and what is the employment outlook and payscale for those majoring in Social Thought ? or is this major a sounding board for socialist teachers who's mission is to endoctrinate young people with this poisonous thinking.

$7.25 goes a lot farther in Charlottesville than it does in San Francisco.

How about instead of raising their pay, they just lower the administration workers pay. Then maybe they can knock a few bucks off of college tuition too.

Only people getting ripped off here are the students.

"political and social thought major"....I am embarrassed for UVA for even offering this as a major. Is this like a poli-sci class without all of the "hard science"...... Do you get an "A" for having thoughts... It is ironic that he is protesting (in part) highly compensated state government employees...when it seems that the goal of this major is to eventually become a highly compensated government employee.

He is bright...and it is a well-deserved dialouge..But bringing "race" into his reasoning is baiting..I would like to ask this young man what his perceptions of the Foxconn employess in China are....Does he interpret that as a racial divide?...Perhaps because it is politically empowering for him now to make such distinctions based on race?...That seems to be the political momentum that the young, college educated black American espouses these days.

For me it is encouraging but not "refreshing” It’s depressing to see students have to take up a struggle against the establishment that should be setting the role model for social responsibility at the University...More Power to this young man and his 18 comrades for fair wages... These young folks give me hope that the next generation won't be swallowed up by the social economic policies that are the root of so many problems in our culture today..
I have a feeling we will hear more from Mr. Joseph Williams in years to come...

Joseph Williams, I applaud you for taking such a stand against what you believe to be injustice, regardless of how others may perceive it. It is qualities of sort that have produced the good in every nation and have benefited the populous. Education is much bigger than academics, it is an understanding of the elements of humanity and a promotion of the characteristics of equality and justice that must govern a nation. You are an exemplary leader.
