Virginia would like to demonstrate how not to execute the perfectly-executed trick play (VIDEO)
Virginia will probably beat N.C. State for its biggest win of the season, but there was one play during the game that the Cavaliers can look back on and see the reason why they have just three wins on the year.
Early in the first quarter, with Virginia looking at first-and-goal from the 4-yard line, the Cavaliers executed a trick play flawlessly.
Until they didn't.
Quarterback Phillip Sims took the snap and tossed to running back Perry Jones, who faked like he was running right only to throw the ball back to Sims wide open in the end zone.
Only one problem — Sims forgot to catch the ball.
Instead of stopping, catching the pass and taking a step into the end zone, Sims tried to continue running and catch the ball behind him. Yes, the ball was a bit under-thrown, but man, you gotta make that catch.
As noted above, in the grand scheme of the game, it meant very little. But it's a painful reminder of the many mistakes and missed opportunities that have haunted Virginia's season.
