Video: Misunderstood Mitch Mustain fires away (literally) in new documentary

If you've been wondering what happened to former Arkansas/USC quarterback Mitch Mustain, Fayetteville, Ark., filmmaker Matthew Wolfe is here to help.

Wolfe is making a documentary on Mustain called, "The Identity Theft of Mitch Mustain," and it picks up where the former top-rated recruit left off after his collegiate eligibility was exhausted.

buffett.jpgThe trailer, which Wolfe posted on the Vimeo site for Incognito Mosquito Flicks, is a little ambiguous. It shows Mustain in his first appearance with the Razorbacks and all the hype that surrounded it, then shows Mustain in a car, which is interlaced with shots of Mustain randomly shooting guns in a forest. It doesn't exactly look like he's hunting, either, unless he hunts with an assault rifle and a handgun.

After we're treated to his display of marksmanship, Mustain says, "The longer I'm away from the game, the more out of the light I get, the easier it is to get comfortable with myself and what it is I want to be."

From this trailer, it looks like Mustain wants to be a trained assassin. Mustain is even wearing black O.J. Simpson-inspired gloves, you know, so there are no prints left when he dumps the weapon into the river.

According to Wolfe, the documentary has little to do with Mustain as a football player and more about what he's been doing since he left football behind:

Wolfe said he hopes to humanize the former star, and to give Mustain a voice he's never had.

Mustain became somewhat of a polarizing figure in Arkansas after he transferred to USC despite leading the Hogs to an 8-0 record as a true freshman starter in 2006.

    Wolfe thinks that's unfair.

"If you read the anonymous posts online about him, you'd think he killed or raped somebody," he said. "I just feel like I want to let him have a chance to respond to all the negative things, to have the final say on something, in his own voice," Wolfe told us.

"He's 24 years old, and in a lot of ways, his life is just beginning," he said. "I think that's the thing that's so interesting."

If the vague trailer was enough to whet your craving for more Mitch Mustain, the man, the myth, the marksman, then you'll be pleased to hear Wolfe plans to have the film finished by the Little Rock Film Festival this spring.

He just didn't have the speed to be a USC QB; he was a step slow in his passing skills and decision making. That was it.

Is that it?! That sure wasn't much. There was supposed to be an indepth interview with Mitch last night after the Super Bowl on our local NBC station here in Fayetteville. I stayed up late to watch it but it never came on. Or I just missed it, did anyone else see it? If Mr. Wolfe does make a film about Mitch, I hope it's at least an hour long. Mitch was a good friend of my nephews and they said he is a really good guitar player. That would be cool to show! Also, Mitch's father, Gary Mustain was a good friend of mine. He came to live with me in Oklahoma back in the early 80's when I was roughnecking on the oil rigs. I tried to help Gary get a job on the rigs but it didn't work out. Gary was so tall, 6' 8", he got a job as a bouncer at the local night club. Mitch wasn't even born yet. My nephew played with Mitch on the 2005 Championship team that went undeafeated so I was around when all the drama started when Mitch went to the U of A. If the film is done right, Mitch Mustain's young life would be very interesting for everyone that cared about the young man and even to people that didn't even know him.

The film should be about the toll big-tiem college ecruiting takes on young men like Mitch. He was pressured to abandon his own inclination to go outside Arkansas and joinup with four teammates and his HS coach to go as a package to Arkansas in spite of the wishes of the coach, Houston Nutt. Mitch had already decided he didn't like Nutt and feeling ame out in a bokk written about his high school team . Nutt is notorious for killing qBs careers, and did all he could to quash the popularity of both Mustain and Malzahn. . Nutt was so wrapped u with his off-field "pursuit" that he deserted the Razorback players and coaches .

His life would have been totally different, also, if it had not been for Houston Nutt (Arkansas Coach at the time). He was 8 and 0 before Nutt pulled him for Dick. Dick could not hit a big red barn with a football. Mustain threws one int and Nutt pulled him and Dick stayed the OB. Nutt could not coach a flea off his on butt but he destroyed this young mans football life. Nutt told the Springdale kids and there coach if they would come to Arkansas he would change his offense but guess what it did not happen. Mustain would be a QB in the NFL if it wasnt for Nutt. Nutt took millions from the U of A and made a deal with Ole MS behind closed doors to coach there and signed a big contract. He takes someone elses players to the Cotton Bowl 2 years in a roll but when he brings in his players he cant win. Why? This is my opinion of what happen to Mustain.

I agree fully with your opinion. Even when Matt Jones was QB at Ark, he didn't know from game -to-game if he was the starter. Nutt resented Mustain and Malzahn being there from day one. Mustain intended to redshirt that first year, but Nutt threw him in the USC game to further humiliate Johnson and the rest is history.

Let's see...air the ball out with a true freshman or give the ball to eventual 2 time Heisman runner up Darren McFadden and Felix Jones. There was more to that interception...he wasn't up to the challenge of playing in a hostile environment and was noticebly rattled, plus he was already acting like a diva especially when coming to the sideline after that play. Btw, who won that game at South Carolina? Oh yeah...the Hogs did. Good call on pulling him even though he probably would have gone back in later had he not gotten his panties in a wad

That is a TERRIBLE trailer. Provides no insight into the thesis of the documentary filmmaker and no entry-point into what the story will be. Completely assumes we'll be interested on the basis of, what, this once acclaimed football player taking target practice set to music? If the idea is to look retrospectively at what happened, I'd suggest waiting about 10 years to give the story some time to ripen and to give the people involved some perspective.

As long as the story of him scoring seven touchdowns at Polk High is in the documentary I'll watch it.

His life would be different if he had beaten Notre Dame

Even more different if his father had been Dave Mustaine. What's your point?

Notre Dame was where was going before he was conned into going to Ark. When he started delaying his committment, ND went with Clausen.

Sometimes life just does not follow a story book line and things go wrong. The story of Mustain's life is far from over however and things could still turn out well for him.

Assault Rifle? Could you bother to at least fact check before posting such ridiculous things? Pure ignorance or arrogance on your part.
