Utah State junior quarterback Darell Garretson is transferring, the program announced Tuesday.

Garretson started 11 games for the program over the past two seasons, but was unlikely to receive much playing time behind Chuckie Keeton, who was granted an additional season of eligibility from the NCAA after missing most of the past two seasons due to knee injuries.

“We thank Darell for his contributions to Utah State football the past two years and wish him the best in the future,” head coach Matt Wells said in a statement.

After Keeton went down with a torn ACL and MCL against BYU in October 2013, Garretson filled in as a freshman and started the team’s final seven games, leading the team to a 6-1 record. He threw for 1,446 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 60 percent of his passes and led the Aggies to a win over Northern Illinois in the Poinsettia Bowl.

Keeton again injured his knee early in the 2014 season and Garretson filled in until going down with a wrist injury. In the five games he played last year, Garretson threw for 1,140 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 67.4 percent of his passes. He also scored twice on the ground.

Following Garretson’s injury, true freshman Kent Myers filled in and proved to be an impressive dual-threat with 866 yards and five touchdowns through the air and 310 yards and five scores on the ground for the 10-4 Aggies.

With that logjam at quarterback, Garretson, a native of Chandler, Ariz., opted to pursue other opportunities.
