Utah State QB Chuckie Keeton suffered minor knee injury, will miss game against Arkansas State

Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton suffered a knee injury against Wake Forest this past weekend and while coach Matt Wells said there was no structural damage, he did say Keeton would not play against Arkansas State this weekend.

“Chuckie is fine from a health standpoint,” Wells said during his weekly press conference. “The ACL is intact, everything is good, it’s just banged up. We’re going to sit him out this week and next week, then reevaluate and see where he’s at during the BYU week.”

The Aggies have a bye before facing BYU on Oct. 3.

Late in the first half against Wake Forest, Keeton was running to his left, went down and got up slowly. After halftime, he returned to the sideline in street clothes.

Keeton suffered a torn ACL in his right knee last year that caused him to miss eight games last season.

Darell Garretson, who stepped in for Keeton a year ago, finished the Wake Forest game. He completed 11-of-16 passes for 121 yards, a touchdown and an interception and helped the Aggies secure a 36-24 victory. Garretson was 6-2 last year.

“Darell has a tremendous amount of confidence, as do his teammates,” Wells said. “We’re very confident in him in his talents and leadership abilities. Just like last year, we’ll have to play very well on defense. We’re going to have to find ways to be difference-makers on special teams, and the guys on offense are going to have to play a little bit better around him. The recipe is the same, the ingredients are just a little different. I feel good about Darell, he’s in a good spot.”
