Unwanted visitors expected at Joe Paterno’s funeral

    Joe Paterno (Andrew Weber/US Presswire)

Penn State will hold a public viewing for former coach Joe Paterno on Tuesday and Wednesday, and while thousands are expected to attend and pay their respects to State College's most famous citizen, a few in attendance will not be there to celebrate Joe Pa's life, but to protest it.

The Westboro Baptist Church, a group of publicity seeking hatemongers known for protesting the funerals of military members and children, has announced that it'll spew its anti-homosexual rhetoric at those there to mourn Paterno during his funeral.

"Joe Paterno is dead. WBC will picket his funeral," Margie Phelps, daughter of Westboro's leader Pastor Fred Phelps, wrote on Twitter. "He's in hell. Don't partake of your neighbor's sin!"

Paterno, 85, died Sunday from lung cancer, just a couple months after he was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Nittany Lions for his involvement in a child sex abuse scandal surrounding former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Sandusky is accused of assaulting at least 10 young boys over a span of 15 years, including one incident that reportedly happened in the Penn State locker room showers. Paterno was notified of the incident and informed athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz, but took no other steps despite Sandusky's continued access to the program  over the next nine years. Although Paterno did what he was legally bound to do, his inaction drew criticism and tainted his 61-year legacy with the Penn State program.

Westboro actually protested Penn State's game against Nebraska, the school's first game in 46 years without Paterno as its head coach.

The school announced it will have open casket viewings on Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center on the Penn State campus and on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to noon at the center. The family will hold a private funeral at 2 p.m. Wednesday and a public funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Bryce Jordan Center, the school's basketball arena.

The church has made a habit out of protesting funerals after it won a Supreme Court decision that said it was the group's First Amendment right to do so. It also protested the funeral of pop icon Michael Jackson and more recently Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

As a Military spouse, I know a lot about WBC. They protest every military funeral they can get to. They call our fallen names like homeosexual, fags, say they will burn in hell. They gave theirs lives for this country. I'm waiting for the day when someone wipes WBC off the face of the map. I hate feeling this way because i am a Christian woman. Fred Phelps is a Monster. Funerals are a time for protests. Joe Pa was human. He made mistakes like everyone else. No one on this earth is perfect. I hope the Freedom Riders get word they'll be there, they won't let them cross the line.

Protesting military funerals is bad, but enabling the rape of children like JoePa did is worse. Get your priorities straight, missy.

Get your priorities straight you idiot Bubby

Number 1.. I'm nobody's Missy. Joe filed the rerort. If you want to lay blame on someone or crucify someone, then you need to go after Tim Curley and Grant Spannier. They kept it quite because they didn't won't to blemish the image o f Penn State. My priorities are straight.. I don't believe in destroying a man's life. No charges were ever filed against Joe. Now PSU wants to honor him. What a bunch of hypocrites.

publicity seeking hatemongers is right on. What are they possibly going to protest for? definitely not about the kids.
And I say this with no malice or evil forethought: They picket a paterno funeral, the people will rip them apart. Didnt they see what they did to trucks when he wa sfired?

Wow, good-luck WBC. You might get a lot more than you protest for. I mean, these are crazy college kids. They rioted when he was fired.

There is a difference between first amendment rights and invading the right to bury your loved ones in peace. Anybody with a shred of common sense could figure that out. It's abuse of the first amendment and as usual these idiots on the Supreme Court drop the ball again. I hope these protesters if they show up get there #$%$ kicked.

If the police had found further evidence or released information in 1998, if the grad student witness had gone to the police when he thought he witnessed a crime, if the school officials had fulfilled their legal obligation to inform the police, if just one of the victims had spoken up... but the blame goes to Paterno because he only told his superiors. Someone tells him that a friend of 50 years, someone with an image almost as good as his, was doing something weird in the shower and he's supposed to run to the police. Easy for us to say YES! now that we've read the grand jury report but he never had that luxury. Paterno would never have allowed kids to be raped. When something like this happens it makes everyone mad and they need someone to blame. Just a very complex and sad situation.

Not complex at all. He was an old man in over his head, didn't want to rock the boat. He should have retired 15 years earlier. It's very unfortunate he hurt what he built. He said himself, "I should have done more".

They will be walking into a hornets nest. And yes there is going to be thousands upon thousands of highly emotional young people with no where near enough security to stop Westboro from wishing they thought twice about coming to Happy Valley.
      • PatrickO 4 months ago
Shame they didn't use that energy against child rapists.
      • Bubby Bristola 4 months ago
Well said, PatrickO, but "Blade" doesn't care about the victims, only his precious Pedophile State University!

Which emotional Penn State Student will "cast the first stone"/bottle at WBC first?

if they have a right to protest this then we have the right to protect the family from those hurtfull words lets give them a big showing on escorting them away way just form a line and keep walking them back untill out of sight if they shall raise a hand to some one then game on

Real nice that the Supreme Court allows these idiots to interrupt funerals. And judging by some of the hateful, uninformed comments on here, 1st Amendment rights are not bestowed based on intelligence or character. Rest in peace, Coach. The good God will reward you for the all the good you accomplished in your lifetime.

Those without sin cast the first stone. Mr. Paterno lived and did great things. In the 80's, many people did not discuss sex, I believe him when he said, I didn't know how to handle it. It was up to the university to pursue this issue.

I can only partially agree with this. He was a father. How, as a parent, can you be made aware of such a thing, whether or not you've ever heard of it before, and not investigate? I fully understand not knowing what to do, not understanding what you have heard, finding it inconceivable that this could happen, BUT, he was a parent and they were talking about children.
      • Karen 3 months ago
Jan, He was 85 yrs old the same age as my father....they come from an era that rape of a boy was unheard of...I truely believe that the man had no clue whether he be a parent or not...and I know of some parents that in this day and age have no clue what goes on with there children and lives...so stop pointing fingers

Although it's exactly what they want to happen, I don't think it's very wise to go to State College and protest JoePa's funeral. I know them getting beat up is exactly what they want so they can sue and make more money to breed demon children to put in front of them to stop people from running them down on the side of the road. However, this isn't a small viewing. It's sad to say, but there are going to be a lot more people at JoePa's funeral then at a soldiers funeral. There isn't enough police to stop as many people at the college.
