Report: Two South Carolina freshman DBs qualify academically, will report to camp
It was reported earlier this month that as many as eight members of South Carolina’s 2014 recruiting class would not qualify academically to enroll in the school and join the football team. Now it appears that two of those players will make it to Columbia, after all.
Gamecock Central reported Wednesday that cornerbacks Wesley Green and Chris Lammons have been admitted into school and will report with the rest of the team when camp begins Friday.
The two corners reportedly were forced to retake standardized tests after both of their original scores were “flagged prior to enrollment.” South Carolina’s admissions committee met on Wednesday and the two players were given the green light.
This has to be welcomed news for South Carolina. Gamecocks assistant Steve Spurrier Jr. told The State earlier in the month that defensive back is “a pretty critical area” for the team in 2014. Both players are rated by Rivals.com as four-star recruits.
The 5-foot-10, 168-pound Green, a native of Lithonia, Ga., was the 17th-best cornerback in the 2014 class. Lammons, a 5-foot-9, 168-pound athlete from Plantation, Fla., who played quarterback in high school, was rated as the 14th-best athlete in the nation.
Those two, along with four-star D.J. Smith and three-star Al Harris Jr., are expected to provide depth and see some early playing time.
The Gamecocks, who finished 11-2 last season, lost its three top cornerbacks from 2013. South Carolina opens its season at home against Texas A&M on August 28 in a Thursday night showdown.
