Texas receiver charged with aggravated assault after punching a fellow student-athlete
Texas receiver Cayleb Jones has been charged with aggravated assault after punching Texas tennis player Joey Swaysland in the face and fracturing his jaw.
The two athletes were fighting over UT star volleyball player Katherine Bell. Bell had dated and broken up with Jones and had started dating Swaysland, an Australian exchange student. Jones wasn’t exactly excited about the two getting together and punched Swaysland during an exchange at a bar on East Sixth Street on Feb. 22. Swaysland didn’t see the punch coming.
According to the police report, Bell told police her relationship with Jones had ended badly. Jones had confronted Bell and Swaysland in the past and told her he didn’t want her talking to any other men.
Swaysland needed surgery to fix his jaw and has not been able to practice with the tennis team.
Aggravated assault is a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. According to a statement by coach Mack Brown, Jones has been "suspended from all team activities pending the completion of the legal process."
