Texas captain Desmond Jackson apologizes for coin toss gaffe

Texas’ game against UCLA over the weekend got off to a strange start before the opening kickoff even took place. Before Jerry Neuheisel led the Bruins to a comeback win, it was the coin toss – yes, the coin toss – that managed to gather some headlines.

Texas captain Desmond Jackson somehow managed to botch the coin toss so UCLA received the kickoff to begin both halves. Jackson, a senior defensive tackle, apologized to Texas fans for the gaffe via Twitter on Tuesday.

As Jackson alluded to in the second tweet, he “froze up” after the Bruins won the toss and deferred their choice to the second half. When this happens, he should have elected for his team to receive the opening kickoff since there was no chance the Bruins would choose to kick to start the second half.

Here’s video of the toss, which even included the referee explaining the circumstances clearly.

The Longhorns ended up losing 20-17, so an additional possession certainly wouldn’t have hurt in a game that went down to the final minutes.
