Back in March, we showed you these gold chrome Akron helmets tweeted out by former Zips lineman Vinnie Rizzo. The helmet with the Akron “Z” logo, coupled with the blue adidas uniform makes for a pretty sharp look.

We weren’t entirely sure if they were official uniforms or if the Zips’ equipment department was testing out some mockup designs that may or may not be used in the future.

Now, thanks to Zips head coach Terry Bowden, it appears that we received an answer.

New uniforms are great to boost the morale and excitement level for a team heading into a new season. The Zips have been to just one bowl game – the 2005 Motor City Bowl -- in program history since joining the FBS level in 1987. That 2005 season is the program’s most recent season with a winning record, and Bowden was brought in to rebuild the program into a contender in the MAC.

After going 1-11 in Bowden’s first season, the Zips went 5-7 in 2013 and are looking to get back to a bowl game in 2014. The new uniforms certainly can’t hurt their effort.
