Starting New Mexico lineman Jamal Price arrested, suspended by team
New Mexico’s Jamal Price, a senior starting offensive lineman, was arrested and is reportedly facing charges of “breaking and entering” and “conspiracy to commit a fourth-degree felony” following an incident Monday night.
According to the Albuquerque Journal, Price allegedly pushed his girlfriend, Lobos women’s basketball player Kadijah Shumpert, in a “dispute over an ‘Apple’ television.” The criminal complaint said that Shumpert called police saying that Price “had broken into her residence” along with another man. Additionally, an officer said that “Shumpert’s hand was bleeding” and that there was “blood on the wall in an entry way.”
Head coach Bob Davie said Tuesday that Price has been suspended from the team following the incident. Price is now the third New Mexico player to be suspended by Davie this offseason. Running back Crusoe Gongbay and cornerback SaQwan Edwards were arrested in a rape case in April, but the charges were dropped.
The team began camp for the 2014 season Wednesday.
“I do think there is a level of frustration that’s shared by the coaches and the players,” Davie said of the arrests. “In fact, I know that. I know guys want to make the right decision. They understand what it takes to make the right decision and they are hurt by this. I know our football team is hurt by this.”
The 6-foot-6, 330-pound Price has played in 34 games in his New Mexico career, making 13 starts. As a junior, Price started 10 games at right guard.
