Stanford will take on Maryland in the Foster Farms Bowl without Ty Montgomery, its top playmaker on offense.

Montgomery, a senior wide receiver, has been dealing with a sprained right shoulder and Cardinal coach David Shaw said Sunday that he won’t play on Tuesday against the Terrapins.

“He can’t protect himself,” Shaw said, per the Mercury News. “We tried a couple different options. If the game was in a week, he’d be full go.”

Montgomery, who is also a huge threat on special teams as a kick returner, led Stanford with 61 catches and 604 yards this season. He injured the shoulder in Stanford’s win over Cal on Nov. 22 and did not play in the team’s regular season finale against UCLA on Nov. 28.

With Montgomery out, Stanford’s top available pass catcher against Maryland (7-5) is 6-foot-4, 254-pound tight end Austin Hooper. Hooper had 35 catches for 428 yards and two scores this season. Other top receivers include Devon Cajuste (30 catches, 510 yards, 4 TDs) and Michael Rector (23 catches, 309 yards and 2 TDs).

The Foster Farms Bowl will kick off at 10 p.m. ET at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
