Thirty years after he completed his college career and more than a decade after leaving pro football as a back-to-back Super Bowl champion, Stanford will retire John Elway's No. 7 jersey this season.

The ceremony is planned during the Cardinal's game against preseason Pac-12 favorite Oregon on Nov. 7. It should add some fuel to the fire for Stanford in what is already expected to be one of the games of the year in the conference.

Elway capped his college career as a consensus All-American as a senior in 1982 and was the first overall draft pick in the 1983 NFL draft. He still holds the Stanford record of touchdown passes in one game, throwing six against Oregon State in 1980.

Elway has been spotted on the Stanford sideline on occasion in recent years scouting Cardinal players in his role as vice president of the Denver Broncos, the franchise for which he played his entire pro career.

Two current Stanford players are scheduled to wear No. 7 this season. Ty Montgomery and Aziz Shittu will be the last to wear it.

Elway is only the third Stanford player to have his jersey number retired. He joins Ernie Nevers (1) and Jim Plunkett (16) in the exclusive club.
