Stanford defensive end Ben Gardner will miss rest of season with injury

Stanford head coach David Shaw announced Tuesday that team captain Ben Gardner will miss the remainder of the 2013 season with a left pectoral injury.

Gardner, a defensive end, left Saturday's win over Oregon State and also had been hampered by an upper-body injury for several weeks. On the season, he had registered 19 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss for the third-ranked defense in the Pac-12.

The Wisconsin native had started 27 of the last 28 games and was named second team All-Pac-12 in 2011 and 2012.

Shaw noted that the injury would extend past the bowl season and would end the fifth-year senior's collegiate career.

Losing Gardner is a tough blow for a No. 5 Cardinal squad who are preparing to contain Heisman candidate Marcus Mariota and No. 2 Oregon next Thursday.
