South Carolina’s QB coach – not its QB – arrested after night out (updated)

Like player, like coach?

South Carolina quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus was arrested Tuesday morning after police spotted him publicly urinating on a street curb and roadway near Carolina Ale House in Greenville, S.C. Officers said they could smell alcohol on him and his eyes were "dilated and glazed over."

Mangus was charged with nuisance conduct.

Now, Mangus could be thought of as a role model of sorts for quarterback Stephen Garcia. After all, Garcia spends more time with Mangus than any other coach. But the question is, who's influencing whom?

Garcia has been in and out of trouble with head coach Steve Spurrier and the university for several alcohol-related incidents. While Garcia has never been nabbed for a DUI or even a nuisance charge — that we know of — he has had a problem with the sauce.

Apparently, something he's learning during film sessions.

Mangus has been with the Gamecocks for three seasons and has been credited with Garcia's turnaround on the field. Unfortunately, now he might be linked with his behavior off of it.

Mangus was issued a ticket worth $470, but what South Carolina does with him will be most interesting. The school has not announced if it will punish Mangus for the incident. But if it doesn't, what kind of message is it sending to its QB?

UPDATE, 1:04 p.m. ET: South Carolina has placed Mangus on indefinite suspension. Spurrier: "We are disappointed in his actions and will handle it accordingly."
