SEC suspends Mississippi State center Dillon Day for stepping on LSU players

The SEC announced Tuesday that Mississippi State senior center Dillon Day is suspended for the Bulldogs’ next game against Texas A&M.

Video (via Saturday Down South) of two plays from MSU’s road upset over LSU Saturday night show the 6-foot-4, 299-pound Day stepping on two Tigers’ defenders while running up field and following the play. On the first play, Day jumps and lads on the stomach of Davon Goldchaux. In another play, Day was again trailing the play and jumped to avoid landing on a teammate. Instead, he landed onto LSU’s Rashard Robinson.

LSU sent video of the plays to the SEC. Tuesday, the conference rendered the suspension due to “multiple flagrant and unsportsmanlike acts during the game, as well as previous disciplinary action for similar behavior.”

Day was suspended for a half by MSU coach Dan Mullen last season for a similar incident.

Here’s the full statement from the SEC:

"Upon review of game video from the contest between LSU and Mississippi State on Sept. 20 in Baton Rouge, La., SEC Commissioner Mike Slive has announced that Mississippi State senior center Dillon Day is suspended for the Bulldog's next game, which is scheduled for Oct. 4 in Starkville. This action is the result of multiple flagrant and unsportsmanlike acts during the game, as well as previous disciplinary action for similar behavior. This action is taken in accordance with Southeastern Conference Constitution, Article 4.4.2 (d) which states that a student-athlete may be suspended if it is determined that the student-athlete has committed a flagrant or unsportsmanlike act."

The decision came a day after Day posted a statement on Twitter defending his actions and issuing an apology.

“I was going too fast at 300 pounds to stop. I had all that momentum running, and I tried to clear the pile after not being able to stop,” Day’s statement, in part, read.

Day is considered to be one of the best centers in the SEC. He was also named a candidate for the Rimington Trophy, which is awarded to the nation’s best center.

As the SEC’s statement read, Day will miss the Bulldogs’ home game against Texas A&M on Oct. 4. The team has a bye this week.

Archie Muniz, a senior, is listed as the team’s backup center.
