Report: Charlie Strong to become Texas’ new coach
Charlie Strong is the new coach at Texas.
According to a report by Chip Brown of Orangebloods.com and Bobby Burton at 247sports.com, Strong, the head coach at Louisville, will replace Mack Brown as the Longhorns head man.
Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel reported Strong's contract is five years worth $5 million per year.
Strong, who reportedly interviewed with Longhorns athletic director Steve Patterson on Tuesday, was one of the final candidates remaining in the not-so-secret coaching search after candidates Jim Mora and Art Briles withdrew their names.
Strong has spent four seasons as the head coach of Louisville and compiled a 20-9 record.
Strong was a hot name in coaching searches last year after the Cardinals finished 11-2 with a win in the Sugar Bowl. His quarterback, Teddy Bridgewater, is strongly considered one of the top picks in the upcoming NFL Draft.
But Strong will have big shoes to fill in Austin as Brown was an icon. He was known not only for making Texas a successful program on the field, but also for unifying the fan base off it.
As Yahoo Sports columnist Pat Forde wrote Friday, Charlie Strong is the anti-Mack Brown.
Strong would, in fact, be the absolute worst fit for the job anyway. He is the anti-Mack Brown, completely averse to extensive interaction with media and boosters. Strong is from the Greta Garbo school – he wants to be left alone. That wouldn't fly at Longhorn Network University. If he's hired, you're free to wonder whether the people involved with the search asked the right questions and got the right answers.
Forde, along with several other national columnists, also tweeted that his sources said Strong’s move to Texas was not a done deal.
If Texas does end up hiring Strong, it will complete a coaching search that took less than a month to complete. Texas had money and resources at their disposal to hire their best possible coach and Patterson and the rest of his search committee must have determined Strong was that guy.
