Report: QB Philip Nelson lands at South Alabama

Quarterback Philip Nelson is hoping the third school is the charm.

The former Rutgers and Minnesota quarterback is trying to restart his career at South Alabama, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune, which received an email from Nelson’s father.

Nelson's college years have been rocky. He played in 19 games at Minnesota in 2012 and 2013 before transferring to Rutgers to play in a more pass-oriented offense. But his stint with the Scarlet Knights was short-lived after he was kicked off the team following an arrest for assault.

Nelson was accused of assaulting former Minnesota State linebacker Isaac Kolstad, who sustained a serious brain injury. Nelson was initially charged with first and third-degree assault, two felonies, but eventually pled guilty to a fifth-degree assault misdemeanor. Nelson was sentenced to 100 hours of community service.

Nelson has two years of eligibility remaining and is eligible to play in the fall.

Brandon Bridge, South Alabama’s starting quarterback last season, signed a free agent deal with the Cowboys. Hunter Vaughn, who started when Bridge was injured, is the frontrunner for the starting job followed by Matt Floyd, who played last season. The Jaguars also have junior Cody Clements and freshman Dallas Davis as quarterbacks on the roster.
