Report: Former Washington assistant who was investigated and cleared by the NCAA expected to take position at Alabama
Tosh Lupoi, the former Cal and Washington assistant who was under NCAA investigation after being accused of giving a recruit $4,500 for tutoring, is expected to be hired as a staff member at Alabama according to CBS Sports’ Jeremy Fowler.
Fowler writes that Lupoi, a former defensive line coach, will not be a position coach at Alabama and that he could “wind up in the team’s personnel department.”
Lupoi was set to follow former Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian to USC until the recruit’s track coach made the allegations to the Los Angeles Times. The coach alleged that Lupoi provided money to help get Andrew Basham eligible. Basham, a former Washington commit who signed his letter of intent last February, did not qualify academically and never played for the school.
Lupoi denied the allegations at the time and has since been cleared of all wrongdoing by the NCAA after a six-week investigation. Lupoi and Washington reached a $300,000 separation settlement in January.
During Lupoi’s time at Cal, he was named the Rivals 2010 Recruiter of the Year.
Lupoi had another brief run-in with the NCAA when he was taken off the road during the 2012 spring evaluation period for a minor, self-reported violation where he "publicized the visit of a prospective student-athlete who ultimately did not commit to UW by confirming information about the recruit to members of the Dawg Pack student section at a men's basketball game."
