Recent Oregon QB transfer Morgan Mahalak lands at Towson

Former Oregon quarterback Morgan Mahalak is headed to the FCS level.

A week after Mahalak announced his intention to leave Oregon, Towson announced that it has landed the services of the sophomore quarterback. Since he is dropping down to the FCS level, Mahalak is eligible to compete immediately for the Tigers in 2016.

“We are happy that we have secured a commitment from such a talented young quarterback,” Towson head coach Rob Ambrose said in a statement. “Morgan brings a tremendous amount of potential and secures great competition at the quarterback position.”

Mahalak asked for and received his release from Oregon in January, but didn’t officially decide to leave the Ducks until last week. He detailed his decision in a Twitter post:

Mahalak didn’t play a down in two seasons at Oregon. A four-star recruit in the 2014 class, Mahalak redshirted his first season before serving as the Ducks’ scout team quarterback in 2015.

The Kentfield, California, native threw for 2,725 yards and 38 touchdowns while rushing for 575 yards and seven scores as a senior at Marin Catholic High School. He also played in the Under Armour All-American Game.

At Oregon, Montana State graduate transfer Dakota Prukop is the favorite to land the starting job in 2016 succeeding Vernon Adams, another FCS transfer. Senior Jeff Lockie, redshirt sophomore Taylor Alie and redshirt freshman Travis Jonsen are also in the mix.
