Colorado fourth-year junior quarterback Nick Hirschman announced Friday on Twitter that he was leaving the Buffaloes’ program. His decision comes after the conclusion of spring and a week where coach Mike MacIntyre and his staff were scheduled to meet individually with players and evaluate them.

Hirschman’s departure leaves the door open for former Texas transfer Connor Wood to become the Buffs’ starting quarterback.

Hirschman and Wood were locked at the top of Colorado's depth chart when spring football ended Tuesday. Both players got the bulk of the reps in last Saturday’s spring game, but Wood looked more comfortable with the offense.

Hirschman has lost two starting quarterbacking battles during his time at CU — 2011 against Tyler Hansen and last year against Kansas transfer Jordan Webb, who suffered a season-ending knee injury last week. Hirschman also has dealt with two separate foot injuries, which have hampered his ability to compete. However, coaches had not yet come out with a post-spring depth chart, so Hirschman was still considered a possible starter.

During his career, Hirschman completed 73 of 128 passes for 781 yards, two touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Hirschman is on pace to graduate this spring and Boulder Daily Camera reporter Kyle Ringo noted on Twitter that he might be looking at the Ivy Leagues.
