Maryland quarterback Daxx Garman received a waiver from the NCAA and is eligible to play this season, according to coach Randy Edsall.

Garman, who started at Oklahoma State last year, transferred to the Terps in May. He graduated Oklahoma State and was admitted into the master’s degree program at Maryland.

The school didn’t think it would have trouble obtaining a waiver for Garman to play right away.

Garman will push senior starter Caleb Rowe, who missed the last seven games of 2014 and spring practices after undergoing knee surgery. Perry Hills and Shane Cockerille were the main quarterbacks during spring football, but neither impressed.

Edsall called Garman “cerebral” and said he threw an accurate ball.

Garman played in nine games at Oklahoma State last season, including eight starts, before being replaced by J.W. Walsh. Garman completed 152 of 277 passes for 2,041 yards with 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Rowe has completed 53.7 percent of his passes for 1,768 yards, with 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions during his Maryland career and has just one win as a starter. He was awarded an extra year of eligibility because injuries caused him to miss the bulk of two seasons. Garman also will have one year of eligibility in College Park.
