Postgame fight mars exciting finish between Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Southern

Helmets turned into weapons, pepper spray filled the air and fans spilled onto the field Saturday during a postgame brawl between Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Southern.

After Arkansas-Pine Bluff blocked a Southern extra point as time expired to preserve a 22-21 win, the scene turned ugly as players started pushing, shoving, throwing punches and — in at least one case — swinging their helmets at opposing players. Police at the game sprayed pepper spray onto the field, but that did little to stop the most violent on-field display between two college football programs since the 2006 brawl between Florida International and Miami.

Oddly, neither coach knew what happened to start the melee. UAPB coach Monte Coleman said he didn't see anything because he had pepper spray in his eyes.

No players on either team were charged and surprisingly no one was injured, but both schools and the conference say they're investigating the fray. Hopefully, severe punishments are handed down because this kind of incident has no place in the game. I understand these teams are rivals and that football games can get heated, but this is crossing the line.

On-field, postgame tussles seemed to be the order of the day this last weekend, even in the NFL. Perhaps there was something in the Gatorade.
