Penn State punter Alex Butterworth pulled a quick one on the officiating crew in Saturday's game against Illinois.
The Nittany Lions were punting on a 4th and one from their own 31 when Butterworth broke out the skills he learned in drama class after kicking the ball. As soon as Illinois' Justin Hardee made contact with his foot -- slight contact we may add -- Butterworth was falling down to the ground.
And voila, a five-yard running into the kicker penalty was called, which gave Penn State a first down.
We don't begrudge the acting skills; they worked. But Penn State didn't do anything with the bonus first down and Butterworth was forced to punt again. Without acting.
