Paula Deen compares her struggle to Michael Sam coming out

Michael Sam and Paula Deen have nothing in common.

Sam is the former Missouri defensive end who made headlines earlier this month when he revealed that he is gay. You know the story by now. After performing at this week’s NFL Combine, Sam, a projected mid-round pick, will become the first openly gay player in NFL history.

Deen is a former TV personality from the Food Network whose career came crashing down last year when she stated in a court deposition that she used to use the N-word. She also considered hiring all black waiters for a "Southern plantation-style" wedding. You know this story too.

As Deen tries to re-establish any semblance of a career, she told People Magazine that she is “fighting to get (her) name back” and compared herself to Sam.

Seriously.

Deen will appear on the cover of People for its Feb. 28 issue. She said she understands it will take time to earn the forgiveness of the public, and then uttered these ridiculous words.

“I feel like ‘embattled’ or ‘disgraced’ will always follow my name. It’s like that black football player who recently came out,” she said, referring to Sam. “He said, ‘I just want to be known as a football player. I don’t want to be known as a gay football player.’ I know exactly what he’s saying.”

Excuse me while I punch myself in the face repeatedly.

Comparing these two scenarios is absurd, especially when you consider the fact that she referred to Sam as “that black football player.” They’re not even close to being the same.

Sorry Paula.
