Oklahoma says RB Joe Mixon is 'not reporting for team activities' as assault investigation continues

Joe Mixon

As the legal investigation continues around five-star freshman running back Joe Mixon, Oklahoma released a statement concerning his status with the program via its official Twitter account Wednesday evening.

Oklahoma stated that Mixon, who was reportedly involved in an altercation with a 20-year-old female OU student in the early morning hours of July 25, is “not reporting for team activities at this time.”

Via SoonerScoop.com, Mixon's attorney Kevin Finlay said that his client is "not being suspended."

"It's our understanding that he's not being suspended, that he's simply being held out from team activities, pending the conclusion of the investigation," Finlay said. "My understanding is that that's University of Oklahoma policy, and that he's being treated as would any student athlete."

In the alleged incident, which reportedly occurred the night Mixon was celebrating his 18th birthday, the alleged victim claims that Mixon punched her in the face, breaking four bones. Finlay said that his client was attacked by a “troubled young woman” and “has done nothing wrong.”

Mixon met with Norman police on Monday and reportedly requested assault charges be filed against the alleged victim. As of Wednesday evening, no charges have been filed.

With the investigation ongoing, the Sooners have pre-emptively ruled not to allow Mixon to participate with the team when practice begins Thursday morning. Mixon, the top-rated all-purpose running back in the 2014 class, was expected to contribute right away for the Sooners.
