Ohio State WR Corey Smith out for season

Ohio State will be without wide receiver Corey Smith for the rest of the season, Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer announced Monday.

Smith, a fifth-year senior, suffered the injury while blocking during Saturday’s win over Indiana. Smith was engaged with a defender while Curtis Samuel carried the ball on a sweep play and had his leg rolled up on as Samuel was tackled. Smith was then carted off the field.

Meyer said Smith’s injury is “similar” to the broken leg that Noah Brown suffered during preseason practice.

Before the injury, Smith had five catches for 62 yards this season and was a key special teams player. He also had 20 receptions for 255 yards in 2014. Smith played his first two seasons at the junior college level in 2011 and 2012 before redshirting his first season at OSU in 2013.

Meyer said there’s a chance Smith could receive a medical redshirt and return in 2016.

The top-ranked Buckeyes, who improved to 5-0 with the 34-27 win over the Hoosiers, host Maryland on Saturday.
