Martin spent four years as an offensive assistant under Brian Kelly after compiling a 74-7 record as head coach at Division II Grand Valley State from 2004-2009.
“Just a great opportunity from a head coaching standpoint,” Martin told Irish Illustrated of the Miami job. “Great school, cradle of coaches, Ara Parseghian, Bo Schembechler, Woody Hayes. There’s a lot that goes along with it.”
Martin, who said he does not know if he will stay with Notre Dame for its bowl game, first interviewed with the Redhawks the day after ND’s season-ending loss at Stanford, meeting with school officials in Chicago on Sunday.
Martin said he has kept in close contact with Kelly throughout the process and that it will be difficult to leave the program, especially after reaching the BCS National Championship last season.
“(Kelly) understands making decisions in the best interests of your family is what it’s always about,” Martin said. “(Notre Dame is) the one place in the world that I love more than any other place in the world in college athletics.”
