Missouri WR Levi Copelin suspended by NCAA for 2014 season
Missouri WR Levi Copelin will miss the 2014 season because of an NCAA suspension.
Copelin took a legal over-the-counter supplement. However, he did not clear it with Missouri officials and failed an NCAA-regulated drug test.
"This supplement is legal and available to the public, but it isn’t approved by the NCAA, and as a result of using it, I failed an NCAA drug test," Copelin said in a statement. "This was a stupid mistake on my part, and I’m very sorry that I put myself and my team in this situation. This is a hard lesson to learn, as I never had the wrong intentions."
According to the NCAA's list of banned substances, eight substances are banned including stimulants, anabolic agents, alcohol and beta blockers (rifle only), diuretics and other masking agents, street drugs, peptide hormones and analogues, anti-estrogens and beta-2 agonists.
The NCAA also has a warning on the page about dietary supplements with the line "dietary supplements are not well regulated and may cause a positive drug test result." The page also encourages players to check with their athletic department before using a product and saus there is no complete list of banned substances.
Copelin, a sophomore in 2014, is roommates with Maty Mauk, Missouri's starting quarterback in 2014. As a freshman last season, he had three catches and is now the second receiver expected to return in 2014 for Missouri who won't see the field for the Tigers. In April, Dorial Green-Beckham was dismissed from the team. He's now at Oklahoma, where he waits on a possible waiver to play in 2014.
Copelin was also suspended with Green-Beckham for a game in 2013. The two missed the Vanderbilt game after they were arrested for suspicion of marijuana possession in a Missouri athletic department parking lot. With a guilty plea, the charges were reduced to trespassing.
According to the Columbia Tribune, Copelin also has a court date on August 6 regarding a disturbing the peace charge from an incident on campus in January. Copelin was arrested after he allegedly made threatening comments at the school's student ID center.
