Michael Dyer’s transfer to Prairie View A&M could have been a hoax

Former Arkansas State/Auburn running back Michael Dyer is going to Prairie View A&M — at least that's what he thinks.

Dyer tweeted late Monday evening that he was going to continue his collegiate career at the historically black university, but there's just one problem — the school has no idea what he's talking about.

After several outlets reported — based on Dyer's tweet — that Dyer had found a new home after being dismissed from Arkansas State before ever taking a snap there, Prairie View A&M coach Heishman Northern told al.com that he didn't know what Dyer was talking about.

"I have not contacted Mike Dyer," Northern told the website. "None of my assistant coaches have, to my knowledge. ...I haven't talked to any coaches from Auburn, I haven't talked to any coaches from Arkansas State, I haven't talked to his high school coaches. And I haven't talked him."

So was everyone a victim of a Michael Dyer hoax? It's possible.

Dyer has two Twitter accounts synced with his name and Auburn football players, according to Auburn football players, follow both. The one that broke the news of Dyer's transfer to Prairie View A&M was @Mike_Dyer5, which has been active. The other account, @Michael5Dyer, has been inactive since Sept. 9.

Strangely, not only did Dyer (or someone posing as Dyer) post his announcement about Prairie View and tweet a picture of Prairie View A&M shoes, he also said he's trying to keep his number, talked about "the classic," which is the Texas State Fair Classic game against Grambling, and thanked Prairie View fans for their support.

Northern stressed to the al.com that he had had no contact with Dyer, any of the coaches from Dyer's high school, Auburn or Arkansas State. He also said that even if Dyer did enroll at Prairie View A&M, there's no guarantee he'd be able to play immediately.

"Everyone assumes that since he's coming to an FCS program, he'd be able to play right away," Northern said. "But since he's already transferred, for any player coming down, there would have to be a waiver for him to play."
