In one of the stranger stories from the weekend, a woman was shot in the leg in what might have been the final football game between New Mexico and New Mexico State with both teams as members of a conference.
The bullet apparently came from outside the stadium and hit a woman who was sitting in the stands watching the 27-14 New Mexico win around 8 p.m.
The woman told police she felt what she thought was a bug bite in her leg, but then she looked down to see she had been shot.
Police say the trajectory of the bullet was consistent with someone firing into the air outside the stadium. The woman was taken to a hospital in El Paso, Texas, but was doing well Sunday morning.
New Mexico State is playing in what could be its final football season. With the WAC not playing football in 2013 because of a lack of membership and New Mexico State without many options in the FBS or FCS, the Aggies are still trying to figure out the next move to keep their football program afloat as an independent. My guess is, however, that shooting fans is probably not the best way to go.
