Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon was the talk of college football when he broke the single-game FBS record by rushing for 408 yards in a win over Nebraska on Nov. 15. Before Gordon broke it, the record stood for 15 years. This time? Seven days.

Oklahoma freshman Samaje Perine surpassed Gordon’s mark with 427 yards in a win over Kansas over the weekend. After initially expressing a bit of disappointment in losing the record, Gordon made sure to send Perine a message of congratulations on Twitter.

“He sent me a direct message, saying congratulations,” Perine said per ESPN.com. “We then joked around a little bit back and forth.”

Gordon made sure to give Perine some advice as well.

“It lasted so short, but I congratulated him and just told him there’s going to be pressure that comes with that,” Gordon said. “People are going to look for you to be explosive and make plays. And I just told him that, ‘Don’t worry about that too much. Don’t worry about the media and the expectations.’”

Gordon said the fact that Perine’s huge day came against a poor Kansas team does not put a negative spin on the record.

“For him to go out there and run for that much, it’s just crazy,” Gordon said. “Regardless of which team it was, rushing for 400-some yards, it’s still not easy. It’s still a Division I team, and that’s just hard to do. So, congrats to him.”

Perine was appreciative of Gordon’s graciousness.

“It was pretty cool,” Perine said. “The fact he reached out to me like that just speaks very highly of his character.”
