Maryland will be getting a boost to its defensive line from another program in the Terps athletic department.

According to a release from the school, head coach Randy Edsall announced Wednesday that wrestler Spencer Myers has been added to the Maryland football roster. Myers, a senior, will remain on the wrestling team in addition to competing on the football field.

“This is something I have been contemplating since coming to Maryland, said Myers, a native of Selinsgrove, Pa. “It was one of the best decisions in my life to wrestle, but an opportunity arose to get a scholarship to play football and it’s something I’ve really wanted to do. It’s a great opportunity for me. I love both sports and I didn’t want to give up one for the other. Luckily, I was able to work it out.”

Myers was a three-sport star at Selinsgrove High School before enrolling at Maryland. He was named the Pennsylvania football defensive player of the year and also won a state championship as a senior. Additionally, Myers earned first team all-state honors as a senior and second team all-state honors as a junior.

In his first year at Maryland, Myers, who wrestles as a heavyweight (285 pounds) placed sixth at the NCAA Championships to become the first true freshman to earn All-American status in Maryland history. Additionally, Myers also won the ACC title in his weight class in 2011 and 2012. He redshirted the 2012-2013 season.
