Mark Mangino is back in coaching after accepting the assistant head coaching position at Youngstown State. Mangino also will coach tight ends for the Penguins.

This is the first time Mangino has resurfaced on the collegiate level since resigning from Kansas amid allegations of mistreatment of players.

Mangino coached at Kansas from 2002-09 and led the program to back-to-back bowl bids for the first time in school history and a win in the Orange Bowl. Kansas has won six total games since his departure.

“This is a homecoming for me,” Mangino said in a statement. “I’m delighted to be at a great school with a great football tradition with a team and coach poised to do great things.

“I am a big believer in Coach {Eric} Wolford’s ‘no shortcuts’ approach that focuses on getting results on and off the field. This school is near and dear to my heart and I’ll work very hard with Coach Wolford to get the job done.”

Mangino has ties to Youngstown State. He was an assistant there under coach Jim Tressel from 1985-87. Also, Youngstown State coach Eric Wofford was an offensive lineman for Kansas State in the early 1990s, where Mangino was an assistant under coach Bill Snyder.

“Every coaching job I have ever taken was a rebuilding project, but this program is not rebuilding,” Mangino said. “This program has the potential to have a very good year and that’s a credit to Eric Wolford, his staff and his team.”
