Several coaches from across the country have been at the Sound Mind Sound Body camp at Chandler Park Academy in suburban Detroit this week, including LSU’s Les Miles. Miles was not in attendance as a coach, however. He was there “as a dad,” he told the Detroit News.
Miles’ son, Manny, is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound class of 2015 quarterback prospect out of University High in Baton Rouge and was there looking to impress the coaches in attendance. The elder Miles, per an SEC rule, was not allowed to participate in the camp as a coach since it was out-of-state.
Miles, who played and coached under Bo Schembechler at the University of Michigan, was asked by local reporters if he would like to see his son follow in his footsteps and play for the Wolverines. Miles jumped at the idea.
“I would love to see him at Michigan. The first place that I took him to tour was Michigan and he fell in love with the place. He said, ‘Dad, I know why you went here,’” Miles said.
Miles speaks highly of his son’s athletic ability. He is a three-sport star who threw two no-hitters as a sophomore on the baseball field and also starts for his school’s soccer team. Despite his father’s praise, the younger Miles, who hopes to play both football and baseball in college, has no interest in suiting up for the Tigers.
“I said to him, ‘Under what circumstance could you come to LSU?’” Miles said. “He says, ‘None.’ He said, ‘Dad, you’re the head coach. I don’t see that path.’ Right now I’m recruiting him. The good news is, I can work on him pretty good.”
Miles said he has fielded calls from other coaches about his son and that Manny was looking forward to competing in the camp.
“You have a son who wants to measure himself with other really great athletes and he wants to see what’s out there,” Miles said. “You compete against some of the best in the country, you realize where your skill level is.”
Miles said after the camp in Michigan, he and his son will head to another camp in Oklahoma.
