Kansas State's win against WVU was the best thing for the Big 12

Kansas State’s 26-20 win against West Virginia on Thursday was what was best for the Big 12 Conference.

The win not only strengthens — and might even improve — the No. 12 Wildcats ranking, it also strengthens TCU’s win against.

While it might appear that another loss for West Virginia only diminishes Baylor’s hopes of ever surpassing TCU in the College Football Playoff rankings, it actually makes that Dec. 6 contest against Kansas State that much more important for the Bears — and for Kansas State.

While no one has been talking about the possibility of Kansas State winning the Big 12, it’s still possible. If the Wildcats were to win out and TCU were to lose at least one of its final two contests, the Wildcats would be the conference champions and might even claim a spot in the College Football Playoff.

However, in this scenario, a two-loss Kansas State team isn't as attractive as some of the other possible two-loss teams out there, and would still be below and one-loss teams remaining.

Overall, the Big 12 has to feel good about the way it’s top three teams are positioned for the playoff with just two weeks remaining on the conference schedule. There’s been a lot of debate whether the Big 12’s lack of a title game will help or hurt them, but the fact that its teams play on the same weekend as the conference championship games probably diminishes that somewhat.

However, it is clear that the Big 12 probably would need some help to squeak one of its teams into the playoff simply because of the strength of schedule of the teams in front of them. Luckily for the Big 12, there’s going to be more than ample opportunity for that to happen. The Big 12 just needs its own potential playoff teams to handle their business going forward.
