Kansas QB Michael Cummings injures knee in spring game

Kansas quarterback Michael Cummings was hit low during the Jayhawks' spring game on Saturday and injured his left knee.

According to new Kansas coach David Beaty, the severity of the injury is unknown, but Cummings limped to the sidelines and didn't return.

“It’s a deal that you’re always scared to death because any time you take a snap, you’re at risk of getting somebody injured,” Beaty said via KansasCity.com.

“And we need every one of them. Our roster is to the point where we need every single guy.”

Cummings, Kansas' returning starter, was wearing a red non-contact jersey. However, he was hit in the leg by safety Michael Glatczak. Beaty said he wasn't sure if Glatczak meant to tackle Cummings – a no-no – or was pushed into the play.

If it's a severe knee injury, all or part of Cummings' 2015 season could be in doubt. As a junior last year, Cummings threw for 1,715 yards, nine touchdowns and six touchdowns. His replacement would likely be Montell Cozart, who got a majority of playing time early in the 2014 season.

Beaty also said that two players were suspended for the spring game, running back Corey Avery and wide receiver Rodriguez Coleman. Avery had 631 yards rushing last year for the Jayhawks as a freshman. Both are suspended for violations of team rules and Beaty said their futures were uncertain.
