Breaking News:

Kansas’ fake punt against Texas Tech from inside its own 20 failed miserably (video)

The element of surprise is crucial for a fake punt. And a fake punt when your punter is standing just in front of his own goal line is quite surprising. But surprise itself isn't enough.

Kansas punter Trevor Pardula found that out while trying to run for a first down on 4th and 13 from Kansas' own 16 yard line against Texas Tech.

After taking the snap, Pardula acted like he was going to punt and took off to his left as most of the Tech punt return team retreated. However, he didn't beat the defender to the corner, and it wasn't even close. Pardula barely got back to the line of scrimmage.

Judging from coach Charlie Weis's reaction, it's possible that Pardula made that decision to take off all on his own. Weis was pricelessly perplexed as to what the heck he had just witness.

And honestly, Kansas didn't need the fake to stay in the game at that point. With the score tied at 10-10, the Jayhawks had been competitive with the Red Raiders. However, on its first play from the Kansas 16 after the poor fake, Tech scored a touchdown to make it 17-10 and added a field goal before halftime for a 20-10 lead.
