Johnny Manziel's "Johnny Football" nickname has stuck to the point where people refer to him as simply "Mr. Football."
The former Texas A&M quarterback and 2012 Heisman Trophy-winner told ESPN analyst John Gruden that he's been called "Mr. Football" before because of the nickname, which originated as he came to Texas A&M as a freshman.
"And I do like (the nickname)," Manziel said. "At the same time, it's really, it's almost -- I get people that come up to me that I don't even think they know my last name. They just know -- people call me 'Mr. Football.'"
Manziel is participating in Gruden's "QB Camp" series for ESPN. Over the past four drafts, Gruden has sat down with draft-eligible quarterbacks for conversations. In addition to Manziel, Central Florida's Blake Bortles, Clemson's Tajh Boyd, Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater, Fresno State's Derek Carr, Eastern Illinois' Jimmy Garoppolo, Northern Illinois' Jordan Lynch, Alabama's AJ McCarron, and Georgia's Aaron Murray are participating.
Gruden brought up the comments that former Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer made Wednesday about Manziel when he said that Manziel was "an arrogant little (expletive)." Manziel acted like he didn't know about the remarks and the conversation turned to Texas A&M's win over Oklahoma in the 2013 Cotton Bowl.
When talking about Manziel, Switzer also mentioned things "off the field," and Gruden and Manziel discussed the distractions that the QB has faced. Manziel became friends with Lebron James, Drake, and did a lot of traveling after he won the Heisman. He admitted he should have laid back a bit more.
"I was asked to do a lot of things. I was asked to do certain things that some people weren't asked to do," Manziel said. "My mom always told me 'There's a time and a place for everything.' And during the spring and after the Heisman, when things happened so fast, I did too much. And I put too much on my own plate and didn't say no enough and should have said no more. And should have stayed in my realm and stayed in College Station and hung out."
