Here's what submissions won't be North Dakota's new nickname

The University of North Dakota is looking for a new nickname after phasing out its previous "Fighting Sioux" one. It reached out to the public for ideas on the new nickname and well, you can guess that there were a ton of entertaining choices.

It released the list of official candidates and non-candidates for selection on Monday, and as you can imagine, the list of the names rejected and the reasoning assocated with them is much more entertaining.

You can find the link to the PDF here, but we want you to be warned there are some, uh, inappropriate ideas. We'll go through some of the highlights of ones fit to print below. If you're a fan of juvenile humor (aren't we all?), you know where to click.

• There were more than 10 submissions for "Bison" as the school's nickname. Bison is the nickname of North Dakota State, and as one submitter put it: "Everyone confuses UND with NDSU anyway. May as well own it. Plus: Bison Bowl. Easy marketing."

• There were multiple suggestions for "Ermine," a type of weasel. Not surprising it was rejected.

• While there were a ton of entries for "Fighting Sioux," "Sioux" and variations, there was also a "Fight 'N Sue." The reasoning? "And have a lawyer with a brief case for the logo. / This will satisfy all contentious parties!" Somehow, there were also two submissions for "Fightin' Tom Hanks." One was simply submitted in an attempt to get Tom Hanks on campus, according to the reasoning.

• "Mustangs" was also a popular choice, along with no nickname whatsoever. "North Dakota" is also an entry on the considered list as well.

• Norsemen, a viking nickname, was pretty popular. Though North Dakota Norsemen could be a mouthful and the nickname doesn't cross gender lines very well.

• The most popular non-Fighting Sioux related nickname was the "Rough Riders." The governor's office even gives out the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider award.

• The last entry on the list? "Zombies from the UNDead." Why? "Zombies are really "IN" right now. The mascot/nickname would be EPIC! The ead could stand for Enlightened And Disciplined!"
