Paying respects. Several thousand students, alumni and fans gathered on the steps Penn State's administration building Sunday night for a candle-light vigil to mourn Joe Paterno, staying for about half-an-hour in snow and ice before marching to the bronze statue-turned-shrine of Paterno across campus. "Today we have experienced a great loss," said cornerback Mike Wallace, one of a half-dozen current and former players and students to address the crowd. "This loss is incomparable to what we gained from Coach Paterno. … We are not just athletes, we are not just students. We are a reflection of what Coach Paterno was."

Penn State president Rodney Erickson and the PSU Board of Trustees issued separate statements Sunday confirming that the university plans to honor Paterno in some fashion, barely two months after firing him in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex scandal. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced later today on the website of Koch Funeral Home in State College. [psu.edu, USA Today, Associated Press, Harrisburg Patriot-News]

The Rap Sheet. Georgia cornerback Sanders Commings was hit with a misdemeanor domestic assault charge Saturday after allegedly striking his girlfriend during an early morning altercation in downtown Athens. Commings, 21, was arrested at 7 a.m. after fleeing the scene, booked and released on $1,000 bond Saturday afternoon.

"Bystanders got involved and separated the parties and it became apparent that during the separation of them that he struck her in the face," said a police spokesman, who would not identify any injuries to the woman. "They at some point in time were able to flag down one of our officers. They also had the young woman with them." [Athens Banner-Herald]

Have to spend it to make it. Washington is paying a pretty penny for its new coaching staff, ponying up $2.73 million — more than any other public school in the Pac-12 last year — for nine assistant coaches. The most expensive of the lot is new defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox, whose contract calls for an SEC-worthy $750,000 in 2012, $800,000 in 2013 and $850,000 in 2014 (he was making $700,000 at Tennessee), but the Huskies also more than doubled the previous salaries of new offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau and ace recruiter Tosh Lupoi, both of whom reportedly made $164,000 last year at Cal. All Brick Everything. Yeah son, Minnesota's got new uniforms, and they look… well, they look pretty much exactly like the old uniforms, except these are backed by Jay-Z:

The most notable change: The font for the numbers, which Nike lifted from the uniforms of the 1940 national championship team. It's also using a brick pattern — "taken directly from one of the walls of Memorial Stadium," as opposed to, you know, just some random bricks — in the numbers, and the finish of the new helmets was "designed to simulate the look of brick." Which I guess makes them officially a bunch of blockheads. [GopherSports.com]

Get well soon. Princeton running back Chuckie Dibilio is recovering in a Philadelphia hospital after suffering a stroke last Thursday. Dibilio, 19, was voted Ivy League Freshman of the Year and first-team all-conference last year after rushing for 1,068 yards, an Ivy record for a freshman.

"They removed a clot in the main artery of his brain," said his father, Chuck, Sr. "They are trying to find out what caused it, so they can prevent it in the future. As far as a long-term prognosis, we are a long way from knowing, but we appreciate all of the support Chuck has received." [Associated Press]

Quickly… A timeline of false Paterno death reports on Saturday night. … The gem of Washington's recruiting class takes an official visit to USC. … Steve Spurrier suspends a safety for violation of team rules. … Kenny Miles may or may not return to South Carolina for his final season. … Ohio State loses a fullback who sees no future for a fullback in Urban Meyer's offense. … And the nation's top "dual threat" quarterback feels "a stronger commitment" to Florida State after his official visit.
