Georgia looking at games at 'iconic stadiums'
Georgia is looking to strengthen its non-conference schedule and is taking possible opponents' stadiums into consideration.
According to Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity, the Bulldogs would like to play road games at "iconic stadiums."
"I ask staff, I ask friends, I ask donors, if you had two or three places where would you like to go? And they've aligned with what I think," McGarity said Tuesday before a UGA Day in Albany. "So that's what we're trying to do, is do some experiences not only for our fans but our students."
The Bulldogs are already playing a home-and-home series with Notre Dame starting in 2017. The Bulldogs head to Notre Dame that season and get the Fighting Irish at home in 2019.
While mentioning Penn State, USC and UCLA as intriguing options, McGarity said a possible series against Ohio State is off the table. Why? Because of former Florida coach Urban Meyer's presence at Ohio State. The two schools were originally scheduled to play each other in 2020 and 2021.
If we're thinking of other teams that McGarity didn't mention, we immediately think of Texas and Nebraska as "iconic" destinations. Oregon would seem to fit the bill too, even if Autzen Stadium doesn't have the lore of others. Wisconsin's Camp Randall wouldn't be a bad idea either.
It's's a good move by McGarity to find stadiums. Home-and-home series are fairly necessary to book Power Five teams, a strategy Georgia is showing it's willing to embrace. And if you're going to travel, you might as well go play places that are pretty cool, right?
