Gary Patterson says both Boykin and Joeckel will play for TCU against Samford

TCU has a starting quarterback. However, both Trevone Boykin and Matt Joeckel will play against Samford.

Gary Patterson said Tuesday that he's decided on a starter. However, like other coaches, he's not going to reveal that information before the game.

"In practice, they were pretty well even," Patterson said. "On my sheet, there was definitely one who had an edge in practices and will be the guy we run out there to start. Both will play, and we'll go about our business. They both did well. We pride ourselves in red zone. In the two stadium scrimmages, the offense did well against the defense."

Not many clues there, eh? Maybe both will start. It's not a crazy idea. Boykin has played both QB and WR in his time at TCU and Patterson hasn't ruled out Boykin seeing time at WR if Joeckel is playing quarterback.

"If you want to learn the offense, the best place to be is at quarterback," Boykin said via PurpleMenace.com. "I think I can jump out there in any position and know the offense. That's not a problem."

Joeckel transferred to TCU from Texas A&M after the 2013 season. You may remember him as the quarterback who started A&M's season opener last year after Johnny Manziel was suspended for a half because of the NCAA's investigation into potential compensation for his autograph.

Boykin has been in a QB battle his entire career at TCU, hence his position versatility. He took over for Casey Pachall in 2012 and split time with him last year.

However, TCU's offense is a bit different than it was those two seasons. Patterson has accelerated his offense's tempo in 2014 to a pace similar to the one Joeckel ran at Texas A&M.

"We've become quicker," Patterson said. "Some of the things we did in 10 minutes, we now do in seven. We're stopping and running something again, and we're still finishing practice 15 minutes early. It tells me we're getting in the same amount of reps, but we're going faster in doing the things we need to do. The kids handled it and fought through it when they were tired."
