Did you know who the "West's Wonderdog Underdog" is? No, you likely didn't.
Now you do. According to Fresno State, it's quarterback Derek Carr, and the school has started a Heisman campaign for their senior star and also called him "The West's Fastest Gun."
Can you have two nicknames?
Carr threw for 460 yards and five touchdowns in the Bulldogs' 41-40 win over Boise State Friday night. The win moved Fresno to 3-0 on the season and kept its BCS-buster hopes alive.
DC4Heisman.com plays a dramatic video of highlights from Fresno's 52-51 overtime victory against Rutgers and also lists accomplishments and fast facts just below. However, a lot of those fast facts are from last year. Apparently it's a career award now.
The scroll includes fun notes like Carr's five touchdown passes in the first half against Colorado last year. Psshh, that's Colorado. And anyway, Kenny Guiton went out and threw six in the first half against Florida A&M on Saturday. Also, did you know that according to Fresno State, Carr's 4.56 40-yard dash time is the fastest in school history for a quarterback?
Plus, Carr and Trent Dilfer are the only two Fresno State quarterbacks to have multiple seasons of passing for more than 3,000 yards.
Through three games this year, Carr has 1,121 passing yards and 12 touchdowns and one interception. His yardage totals are good enough to put him ninth in the country despite playing one less game than any other quarterback in the top 15.
Does Carr have a chance? In all honestly, likely not, even if Fresno State goes undefeated and does make it to a BCS bowl. However, he's got a great story even without a great season after his newborn son spent 23 days in the hospital before the beginning of the season. But we appreciate Fresno State's optimism. However, they may want to start boasting about 2013 a little more. Heck, just move this page to the front.
