Four Vanderbilt football players have been dismissed from the football team and suspended from the university, according to a statement released over the weekend.

Last week, Metro police sex crimes detectives began looking into a case that allegedly occurred at a Vanderbilt dorm. According to The Tennessean, both police officials and the university have acknowledged that the suspensions are related to that ongoing investigation.

The unnamed players have also been banned from campus during their suspension, and may not return for any purpose without explicit permission from the Office of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity.

In a Saturday email to The Tennessean, Vanderbilt athletics director David Williams wrote that he had “no statement at this time.”

This isn’t the first negative incident of the offseason for Commodores head coach James Franklin, who saw wide receiver/cornerback Jacques Franklin transfer to Jacksonville State following a violation of team rules. That violation? Stabbing a former Vandy offensive lineman with his pocket knife at a bar earlier in the spring.
