Four Clemson players, including two returning starters, suspended for season opener at Georgia

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney announced Tuesday that four players, including two returning starters, will be suspended for the team’s season opener.

Returning starters Corey Crawford, a defensive end, and David Beasley, a guard, along with cornerback Garry Peters and tackle Shaq Anthony will miss the August 30 showdown at Georgia due to a team rules violation.

According to The Post and Courier, Swinney “emphasized” that none of the players were arrested.

“They didn’t rob a bank, but they broke a team rule,” Swinney said.

Crawford started all 12 games for the Tigers last season, registering 10.5 tackles for loss and three sacks while Beasley started seven games at left guard. Both players will be seniors next season.

“A huge part of our program is teaching accountability, responsibility and that there are consequences for your actions,” Swinney said in a statement. “These are four good young men, but they broke a team rule and as a result, they will each miss a game. I am hopeful that they will learn and grow from this and have a great 2014 season on and off the field.”

Anthony, who will be a junior next year, also saw significant playing time on the offensive line for the Tigers, starting three games at right tackle. Peters, also a soon-to-be senior, appeared in 10 games as a backup last season.

Anthony and Peters are both in contention for a starting position in 2014.
