Former Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe wants to be considered for the Army vacancy

Being the head coach at Army isn’t for everyone, but at least one former FBS coach thinks it’s the right job for him.

Jim Grobe, who just stepped down at Wake Forest, said he’d be interested in the vacancy at Army if the military academy were to come knocking.

“Absolutely, mainly because I love the academies,” Grobe told CBS Charlotte. “I spent eleven years at the Air Force Academy with Fisher DeBerry and those kids are in my heart. I have not talked to them, so whether that’s something they would want, it’s certainly something I’m interested in.”

Grobe spent 1984-1994 as the linebackers coach at the Air Force Academy before becoming the head coach at Ohio. He then spent 13 seasons at Wake Forest before deciding to step down. He was 77-82 with the Demon Deacons and had just four winning seasons, including an 11-3 campaign in 2006 that resulted in a trip to the Orange Bowl.

While Grobe’s record doesn’t exactly jump off the page, his experience of making Wake Forest a viable program when no one thought he could is definitely a selling point. Grobe told CBS Charlotte that when he got to Wake Forest, no one expected the team to win.

“Then we got to the point everyone realized we could win. We went to the Orange Bowl, then won nine games and then eight,” Grobe said. “Everyone realized we could win, but then we got to the point where everyone expected us to win. That’s not a good place to be at Wake Forest, especially if you’re not doing things to keep up with other programs. On one hand it was an honor they thought I could do it by myself, but at some point the school needed to step up and the best opportunity for that to happen was for Jim Grobe not to be there.”

Army has only had three winning seasons since 1991.

It also doesn’t hurt that Grobe’s Demon Deacons defeated Navy, Army’s nemesis, three times during his tenure.

Other names that have been mentioned in the Army coaching search include Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan, Navy offensive coordinator Ivin Jasper, Georgia Southern head coach Jeff Monken, Central Florida offensive coordinator and former Army coach Charlie Taafe. Ohio State co-offensive coordinator Ed Warinner and New York Jets special teams coach Ben Kowitca.
